NSW political parties propose competing housing plans for Sydney
As New South Wales prepares for an election in March, housing has emerged as a central issue for voters. Major political parties have presented opposing strategies for increasing residential density in Sydney's eastern suburbs.
The Coalition has proposed closing the Long Bay Correctional Facility to develop more than 12,000 new homes on the 50-hectare coastal site. Under this plan, approximately one-third of the new residences would be designated for social and affordable housing. To manage the loss of the 1,200-bed facility, the Coalition suggests upgrading existing correctional centers, such as the Goulburn jail.
In contrast, the NSW Labor government has rejected the Long Bay proposal. Instead, Labor plans to build 9,400 homes centered around a proposed new train station at Woollahra. This strategy focuses on transit-oriented development to address the state's housing shortage.
