ASIO Director‑General Mike Burgess’s annual threat assessment described the country’s security environment as “degraded,” noting that the “probable” terror threat level does not capture the increasing likelihood of politically motivated violence. Burgess highlighted a shift to online radicalisation, low‑capability attacks by lone actors, and extremist activity across the ideological spectrum, urging communities to confront hate and warning that even a large ASIO workforce may struggle to prevent such threats.
