NSW Premier considers arming Jewish security group in public spaces

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns is considering a proposal to allow the Community Security Group (CSG) to carry firearms while operating at Jewish events in public places. Minns stated that the proposal requires consideration, noting that many in the Jewish community may feel unsafe in public spaces without armed protection.

This proposal has met resistance from NSW Police Deputy Commissioner David Hudson, who expressed concerns during a Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion. Hudson argued that granting special security privileges to specific groups could fracture tenuous relationships between different societal groups.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley has signaled her support for the NSW Police while the Premier's proposal remains under review. Catley emphasized the government's existing efforts to enhance security, specifically citing the establishment of a new Armed Response Command. This unit is set to include 250 police officers, 28 civilian staff, rapid-response vehicles, and a 24-hour operations centre.
