NSW Premier supports extending antisemitism royal commission

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has expressed support for extending the Royal Commission into Antisemitism and Social Cohesion by a few weeks if necessary. Minns stated that the commission is essential to uncovering the “fundamental truth” regarding the Bondi Beach massacre and its lead-up, noting that both state and federal governments are relying on its recommendations for policy development.

Despite support from Minns and NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane, calls to extend the inquiry have not gained endorsement from major Jewish peak bodies. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry and the Zionist Federation of Australia have notably declined to support the extension. Some community figures expressed concerns that delaying the reporting date beyond December 14 could cause the commission to lose momentum and public support.

An online petition led by advocate Marnie Perlstein, which argues for greater accountability from political figures, has gathered thousands of signatures. However, critics of the extension suggest that a longer timeframe would not address the current legalistic approach of the commission, which has declined to call government ministers to give evidence.
