NSW reviews management of 27 historic timber truss bridges
Transport for NSW has opened a community consultation to review the state’s Timber Truss Bridge Strategy. The review aims to determine how 27 historic timber truss bridges, dating from 1880 to 1930, can be preserved as heritage landmarks while meeting the demands of a modern transport network.
Feedback from regional communities has indicated that some historic structures may no longer meet contemporary economic and productive needs. Issues such as increasing traffic volumes and the use of higher-productivity vehicles have placed additional maintenance demands on these structures. The review seeks to balance heritage conservation with the requirements of agricultural, commercial, and freight operators.
The consultation period runs until 30 October, with an updated strategy expected to be released in late 2027. The review does not currently announce new heavy vehicle restrictions or bridge replacements, but rather provides an opportunity to examine if current management suits changing freight requirements.
