NSW Rural Fire Service volunteers honored for 2,600 years of service

More than 70 volunteers from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) in the South West Slopes were honored at a ceremony in Cunningar for a combined 2,600 years of service to their communities.

Among the recipients were fifteen individuals who have each served for at least 50 years, including five members with over 60 years of service. The ceremony included the presentation of National Medals and Long Service Medals by RFS Assistant Commissioner Dr. Leigh Pilkington.

A notable moment of the event involved the family of John McGrath, who accepted a Long Service Medal and sixth clasp on his behalf. Mr. McGrath, who passed away in March at age 89, had provided an extraordinary 74 years of service to the Boorowa Support and Boorowa Hughstonia brigades. His son, Tim McGrath, has served as captain of the Boorowa Hughstonia Brigade for the last 20 years.
