NSW SES upgrades facilities in Murwillumbah and Newcastle
The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) is undergoing significant infrastructure upgrades in Murwillumbah and Newcastle to enhance disaster response capabilities.
In Murwillumbah, construction is underway on a $6.2 million purpose-built facility on Old Lismore Road. The project is funded by a $3.85 million investment from the NSW Government and $2.35 million from the Tweed Shire Council. Expected to be completed in early 2027, the new unit will feature expanded garage bays, improved training areas, and dedicated operational rooms to replace the current facility that has outgrown its capacity. The Murwillumbah unit has responded to nearly 850 incidents in the last three years, primarily related to storms and flooding.
Simultaneously, a $4.5 million refurbishment is progressing at the Newcastle SES City of Newcastle Unit headquarters in Mayfield West. This NSW Government-funded project aims to create a modern facility featuring an Incident Command Centre equipped with real-time coordination technology. The upgrade includes expanded storage and specialized garages for modern rescue vehicles and boats. The project is managed by the City of Newcastle and is slated for completion by mid-2027.
