NSW Supreme Court sets trial date for teen accused of murder

A trial date has been set for a 14-year-old Chinese national accused of murdering a fellow exchange student in Lake Macquarie last year. The teenager pleaded not guilty to murder in the NSW Supreme Court on Friday.

The incident occurred on August 4 at a host family home in Edgeworth. The victim, also a 14-year-old Chinese exchange student, died from a stab wound. The prosecution of a child and foreign national for murder is considered unprecedented in Australian legal circles.

Justice Peter Hamill has scheduled the trial for June 2027. The case may involve the legal principle of ‘doli incapax’, which presumes children between 10 and 14 are incapable of forming criminal intent. The defendant's mental health is also expected to be a factor in the proceedings.
