NSW TrainLink to trial free Wi-Fi on regional long-distance services
Transport for NSW will launch a three-month trial of free onboard Wi-Fi on selected NSW TrainLink long-distance services starting in late 2026. The initiative aims to improve digital connectivity for regional passengers by combining Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology with 4G and 5G cellular communications.
The trial will be conducted using two specific trains: one Xplorer train serving routes such as Sydney to Canberra, Broken Hill, Griffith, and Moree/Armidale, and one XPT train serving routes including Sydney to Melbourne, Brisbane, Casino, Grafton, and Dubbo. The technology, delivered by UK-based Motion Applied through its subsidiary MA Connected Intelligence, uses roof-mounted equipment to connect to satellite constellations and ground networks.
While regional rail advocates have welcomed the addition of digital amenities to improve the long-distance travel experience, some campaigners argue that improved connectivity should not overshadow the need for increased service frequency in regional centers like Griffith.
