NTNU performing arts productions receive acclaim at Edinburgh Fringe

The Department of Performing Arts at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) received international acclaim at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Two original productions, “Mountains and Seas: A Rock Musical” and “Formosa Viva,” were showcased by a team of students and faculty.

“Mountains and Seas: A Rock Musical,” based on the works of Gao Xingjian, earned a five-star rating from UK Theatre Web (UKTW) and four-star reviews from the British Theatre Guide, Echo UK Theatre, and A Young(ish) Perspective. Critics praised the production for blending ancient Eastern mythology with contemporary rock music, physical theater, and visual projections, noting that the performers used modern training to breathe new life into traditional stories.

“Formosa Viva,” a physical theater piece exploring 500 years of Taiwanese history through dance and music, received a four-star review from Theatre Village. The production was noted for the elegance and control demonstrated by the dancers. The participation in the festival serves as a practical demonstration of the department's recent transition into a full academic department, moving students from classroom learners to professional international performers.
