NTPC invites bids for sodium-ion battery storage pilot project

NTPC Limited has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to develop and install a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) utilizing sodium-ion battery technology. The pilot project will be situated at existing NTPC thermal power stations or office buildings to evaluate the technology's performance, safety, reliability, and techno-commercial viability under Indian grid and climatic conditions.

Applicants may propose two configurations: a BESS with 100 kWh of usable energy capacity for standardized comparison, or a custom capacity based on their specific technology and demonstration scale. The scope of work encompasses the entire lifecycle, including design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, and three years of comprehensive maintenance.

Financial requirements for the project are tied to the Technology Readiness Level (TRL). For technologies at TRL 4 or TRL 5, participating parties must contribute at least 50% of the total project cost. For technologies at TRL 6 or higher, no minimum financial contribution is mandatory. The bid submission deadline is set for October 15, 2026.
