NTPC terminates GR Infraprojects contract for Maharashtra battery storage project

NTPC Ltd has terminated a contract with GR Infraprojects Ltd (GRIL) for a 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at the Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra.

NTPC cited the contractor’s failure to meet contractual obligations and project progress as the reason for termination. Following the decision, NTPC has moved to encash available securities, including a mobilization advance bank guarantee from HDFC Bank and insurance performance surety bonds from Bajaj General Insurance, totaling approximately INR 91 crore. NTPC intends to re-tender the project at the risk and cost of GRIL to ensure the timely integration of renewable energy support.

GR Infraprojects has issued a termination notice, citing Force Majeure and War Risk circumstances as well as related contractual issues. The company has invoked dispute resolution mechanisms and is evaluating its legal options regarding the matter.
