NTPC to expand nuclear power capacity through new feasibility studies
State-owned power giant NTPC is expanding its non-fossil fuel energy capacity by initiating feasibility studies for nuclear power projects in several Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to establish 30GW of nuclear capacity, contributing to the Indian government’s goal of reaching 100GW of nuclear capacity by 2047.
NTPC aims to increase its non-fossil fuel capacity by at least 2GW by 2032. The company has already completed feasibility studies in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha, identifying Banka, Basai, and Nabarangpur as potential sites. The proposed projects typically consist of 1,400MW, divided into two 700MW units.
The development process involves submitting proposals to the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) for review by the Standing Site Selection Committee. If deemed technically feasible, the projects proceed to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). Industry estimates indicate that establishing 1GW of nuclear capacity requires an investment of ₹15,000-20,000 crore and a minimum of three years from concept to commissioning.
