NTT Docomo expands Starlink satellite service for 2028

NTT Docomo has reached an agreement with Starlink Japan, GK to expand its ‘docomo Starlink Direct’ service using next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 satellites. The partnership aims to enhance connectivity for smartphones and IoT devices in areas lacking traditional 4G or 5G coverage.

By fiscal year 2028, Docomo plans to introduce advanced capabilities including voice calls and high-speed internet for web browsing. Currently, the service is limited to text messaging and specific applications. The expansion is expected to improve connectivity in remote locations such as mountains, islands, and maritime environments.

Since its launch on April 27, 2026, the service has seen significant adoption, with approximately 6.5 million connections reported within the first three months. While consumer services are available to all Docomo plan holders, corporate-facing services will be managed by NTT Docomo Business.
