Nubank in talks to acquire British digital bank Monzo

Nubank, through its parent company Nu Holdings, is reportedly in early-stage discussions to acquire the British digital bank Monzo. The potential transaction, which could involve a mix of cash and stock, is estimated to value Monzo between £8 billion and £10 billion ($10.6 billion to $13.25 billion).

Monzo has engaged financial advisors Morgan Stanley and Qatalyst to explore strategic alternatives. Besides a potential sale to Nubank, Monzo is also considering a new funding round valued at over £8 billion to fuel its expansion across mainland Europe, or potentially a private equity minority investment.

Market reaction to the news has been negative for Nubank; its shares fell between 8% and 10% on the Nasdaq. Analysts from JPMorgan and Citi noted that while the deal could be transformational by providing immediate access to developed markets and sterling-denominated deposits, it carries significant execution risks, including high valuation, regulatory scrutiny in the UK, and the complexity of cross-border integration.
