Nubia Z70 Ultra modified with CPU coolers to run desktop games
A Reddit user has demonstrated the extreme performance potential of a smartphone by converting a Nubia Z70 Ultra into a makeshift desktop PC. To bypass thermal limitations, the user clamped the device between two full-sized desktop CPU coolers inside a custom acrylic case.
The modification involved removing the original chassis, camera modules, and radio components to allow for better heat circulation. While the phone's display was relocated to the acrylic casing, the internal hardware—featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC and 24GB of RAM—was directly interfaced with the heat sinks.
Using a native Termux and XFCE4 Linux environment running on Android, the modified device successfully ran The Witcher 3 at Full HD resolution on Ultra graphics settings, maintaining an average of 20 to 30 fps. In 3DMark Wild Life Extreme stress tests, the device achieved scores between 6,910 and 6,980 points.
