Nubia Z70 Ultra smartphone converted into a desktop PC by modder

A hardware modder has successfully converted a Nubia Z70 Ultra smartphone into a functional desktop PC. The project, shared by user ntsow on Reddit, involved sandwiching the device between two massive CPU heatsinks to manage thermal output.

To achieve this, the smartphone's screen was removed to allow one heatsink to make direct contact with the chip. The device utilizes a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and 24GB of RAM. On the software side, the setup runs a full Linux desktop via Termux with GPU acceleration. Windows applications and games are executed using Wine, Box64, and the GameNative Android emulator.

The modification allows the device to run demanding software, such as The Witcher 3, at 1080p resolution with frame rates between 20 and 30 FPS. The setup can be connected to an external monitor and supports keyboard and mouse input for a complete desktop experience.
