Nuclear deterrence questioned amid Ukraine and Iran conflicts
Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran are raising questions regarding the effectiveness of nuclear deterrence. In Ukraine, recent large-scale drone and long-range missile strikes by Kyiv have targeted locations deep within Russian territory, including Russian nuclear bombers and early warning systems.
Despite Russia announcing tactical nuclear weapon exercises near the Ukrainian border in May, Moscow has not responded with nuclear force. This lack of response has led political experts, such as former US and NATO official Rose Gottermoeller, to question the long-standing doctrine that nuclear possession guarantees security.
