Nuclear energy expansion faces challenges from extreme drought
Thirty-eight nations, including France, China, the United States, and Brazil, have committed to using nuclear energy as a primary tool for decarbonization. This commitment follows the COP28 summit in Dubai, where the ‘Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy by 2050’ was signed to help achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
However, extreme summer heat and prolonged droughts have significantly lowered European river levels to historic minimums. This lack of water poses a direct threat to nuclear power plants, which require substantial water supplies for reactor cooling. The environmental conditions raise questions regarding the viability of multi-billion euro continental energy plans in a warming climate.
Within the European Union, a specific 'Nuclear Alliance' has formed, led by France and including 16 members such as Belgium, Poland, and the Czech Republic, with the goal of reaching 150 gigawatts.
