Nuclear energy expansion progresses in Poland and Czech Republic

Nuclear energy development is advancing in Central Europe through large-scale infrastructure projects and the planning of small modular reactors (SMRs). In Poland, preparatory works for a major nuclear power plant are underway. Local companies have secured significant contracts: Budimex has signed a 209 million PLN contract for earthworks, including the movement of 6 million cubic meters of soil; Unihouse has been awarded over 200 million PLN to build temporary facilities for 1,000 workers; and Doraco has secured a contract for geological and geotechnical support.

Simultaneously, the Czech Republic is exploring SMR technology through a partnership between ČEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR. Three potential locations have been identified: Temelín, Tušimice, and Dětmarovice. The Dětmarovice site is of particular interest to Poland due to its proximity to the border. While the Czech government has listed Dětmarovice as one of 45 potential sites rather than a preferred location, the project remains under monitoring. Polish authorities, specifically the General Directorate for Environmental Protection, maintain the right to oversee the process regarding transboundary environmental impacts.
