Nuclear energy resurgence drives global strategic shifts
Global interest in nuclear energy is experiencing a significant resurgence as nations seek to ensure energy security, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and meet climate goals. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted at the 70th IAEA General Conference that global nuclear capacity could triple by 2060, marking a major shift from the period of hesitation following historical accidents like Chernobyl and Fukushima.
Countries including Italy, Japan, and Serbia are reconsidering nuclear policies, utilizing advanced technologies that prioritize safety and low emissions. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen previously acknowledged that the EU’s past abandonment of nuclear power was a strategic error that increased reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels.
Representing Vietnam at the IAEA conference, officials reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to developing atomic energy for peaceful purposes to support socio-economic development and sustainable energy security. Vietnam is currently implementing its strategy for the peaceful application of atomic energy through 2035, with a vision toward 2050, which includes preparations for nuclear power projects in Ninh Thuan and the development of a new research reactor center.
