Nuclear energy sector sees fuel testing and major utility expansion plans
Lightbridge Corporation has secured a position within the Idaho National Laboratory test reactor to irradiate its advanced nuclear fuel technology under real reactor conditions. This development is part of a framework agreement with Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC, the operating contractor for the laboratory. The company’s proprietary Lightbridge Fuel aims to improve reactor safety, economics, and proliferation resistance for both existing light-water reactors and new small modular reactors.
Simultaneously, the nuclear sector is seeing significant long-term planning from utility companies. A survey by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) involving 21 American utilities indicates plans for 33.6 GW of new nuclear generation over the next 15 years, with much of that capacity expected between 2035 and 2039. Utilities are increasingly looking toward nuclear power to meet rising electricity demands from data centers, domestic manufacturing, and electrification, with many planning to operate existing units for 80 to 100 years.
