Nuclear organizations urge global expansion as Slovakia's Mochovce 4 begins power generation

International nuclear organizations are calling on governments to establish stable conditions for the expansion of nuclear power, including the construction of new reactors and increased capacity. During the ‘Roadmaps to New Nuclear’ conference in Paris, organized by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy, leaders discussed energy security, financing, and supply chains.

OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann noted that approximately 80 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity is currently under construction across 15 countries, including Egypt and Turkey. He highlighted that 38 countries now support the goal of tripling global nuclear capacity by 2050, while the United States aims to quadruple its own capacity by that time.

In a specific development, Slovakia’s Mochovce 4 unit began power generation on Monday at 15:33. Operated by Slovenske elektrárne, this marks the final major stage before the unit is fully operational. The reactor's output will be increased in gradual stages, including 5%, 20%, 35%, 55%, 75%, and 90%, followed by a 144-hour test at full power. The project, which has faced long-term delays since construction began in 1986, is expected to significantly bolster Slovakia’s energy security and climate goals.
