Nuclear waste management: Japan reuses decontamination soil as Finland nears repository launch

The Japanese government has announced plans to reuse decontamination soil from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident at two local government branch offices. This move, discussed during a full cabinet meeting, aims to reduce the volume of soil requiring final disposal outside of Fukushima Prefecture. Since July last year, such soil has already been utilized at 12 locations within Tokyo, including the Prime Minister’s Official Residence and various central government ministries in Kasumigaseki.

In a separate development regarding nuclear waste management, Finland is poised to begin operations at the world’s first permanent deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste. Following a four-and-a-half-year review process, nuclear regulatory authorities have moved toward allowing the underground burial of spent nuclear fuel, with operations expected to commence as early as next year.
