Nuclear waste transport delayed by activists on A31

Activists delayed a Castor nuclear waste transport on the A31 motorway near Dorsten during the night. According to the anti-nuclear movement, participants rappelled from a bridge near the Schermbeck junction to protest the shipment. The group displayed a banner reading ‘Stoppt den Scheiß’ (Stop this shit).

Police reported that the action caused delays and required temporary traffic diversions. Three individuals—a 20-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman, and a 37-year-old—were taken into custody. Despite the protest, the heavy-duty vehicle eventually reached the interim storage facility in Ahaus by morning.

This was the 23rd Castor transport originating from Jülich. The ongoing operation involves moving 152 Castor containers through North Rhine-Westphalia. The NRW Ministry of Economic Affairs estimates that the transport of the final containers could continue until summer 2028.
