Nueva EPS launches shock plan to cut health service lawsuits in Colombia

Colombia's health insurer Nueva EPS announced a "Plan de Choque" under Resolution 01 to tackle a backlog of judicial actions known as tutelas, which users file to secure access to health services. The insurer reports about 170,000 pending judicial notifications, with 40,000 under review, and aims to reduce the number of tutelas to zero.

The plan is organized around five pillars: managing tutela notifications, directing health services, overseeing service provision, strengthening judicial defence, and creating a special route for service delivery. It also includes measures to speed up medication delivery and improve specialist access. "We are studying the causes that generate tutelas to implement fundamental solutions that improve service access and reduce the need for this mechanism," said medical director Jorge Iván Ospina, the entity's interventor.
