Nuevo Laredo expands ‘Piso Firme’ housing program
The municipal government of Nuevo Laredo is advancing its ‘Piso Firme’ program, which aims to replace dirt floors with concrete in the homes of vulnerable families. Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal reported that 98 concrete floors were delivered during the first two quarters of the program, consisting of 41 installations in the first quarter and 57 in the second.
An additional 91 installations are scheduled for the third quarter, bringing the total expected beneficiaries to 189 families. Liliana Arjona Barocio, the Secretary of Social Welfare, stated that the initiative is designed to reduce health risks associated with extreme poverty, such as dust, humidity, and the spread of communicable diseases. The program specifically targets households where residents may struggle to afford such improvements, aiming to provide safer and more hygienic living conditions for children, the elderly, and those with health issues.
