Sonora increases housing goal to 65,000 units

The state of Sonora has significantly expanded its 'Viviendas del Bienestar' housing goal from 33,800 to 65,000 units. This initiative, supported by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, follows Sonora becoming the first state to provide the necessary land reserves for the program.

Currently, over 29,300 homes are under construction and 7,500 are in the project phase. To maintain affordability for low-income families, the state government has assumed the costs for essential infrastructure, including water, drainage, and electricity. This contrasts with previous administrations that produced only 726 homes over 18 years.

In addition to housing, Sonora is investing over 20 billion pesos in road infrastructure between 2021 and 2026 to improve regional connectivity. Furthermore, local legislator Elly Sallard is proposing reforms to the State Housing Law to ensure new developments include essential services, public transport, and climate-adapted designs.
