Nuevo Laredo hosts second Novillo Gordo livestock competition
The municipal government of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, held the second edition of the Novillo Gordo competition to support local livestock producers and improve regional competitiveness. The event featured 21 specimens divided into medium and large weight categories, which were evaluated by an international judge based on conformation, handling, and weight gain after a 140-day preparation period.
Winners in each category received cash prizes ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 pesos. Additionally, 12 tons of livestock feed—contributed equally by the municipal government, the Local Livestock Association of Nuevo Laredo, and the Regional Livestock Union of Tamaulipas—will be distributed among the 21 participating producers.
The administration also highlighted infrastructure investments at the Municipal Slaughterhouse (Rastro Municipal), including recent works totaling over 723,000 pesos and previous investments exceeding 4.3 million pesos. Ongoing support for the sector includes free diagnostic tests for bovine tuberculosis and brucellosis, as well as subsidies for minerals and waterers. The competition is set to conclude on October 28 with a carcass classification and auction.
