Nuevo Laredo ranks as Mexico’s safest city in latest INEGI security survey

The INEGI National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU) for the second quarter of 2026 shows Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, achieving the best perception of safety among Mexican cities. Between March and June, residents’ perception of insecurity fell from 34.8 % to 26.5 %, an 8.3‑point drop that ranks the city second nationally in improvement, behind only Ciudad Nezahualcóyolt. With a national average perception of insecurity at 59.8 %, Nuevo Laredo’s 26.5 % places it among the country’s seven safest municipalities, alongside San Pedro Garza García, Piedras Negras, San Nicolás de los Garza and Saltillo.

The results are attributed to a sustained strategy led by Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosa and Governor Américo Villarreal, focusing on revitalising public spaces, modernising lighting, and expanding educational, sports, cultural and social programmes while maintaining close coordination with state and federal security forces. The survey’s credibility, coming from the official statistics agency, underscores the measurable shift in public confidence.
