Nuevo Laredo rehabilitates historic Escuadrón 201 Gymnasium

The municipal government of Nuevo Laredo has completed a 7.16 million peso rehabilitation of the Escuadrón 201 Gymnasium, located at the General No. 1 Secondary School. The renovation includes new roofing, waterproofing, structural repairs, lighting, bleachers, basketball hoops, and painting.

The facility holds significant historical value for the region. In July 1944, approximately 200 Mexican youths passed through Nuevo Laredo by train to undergo military training in the United States before joining the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force, known as Escuadrón 201, to fight in the Pacific during World War II. The gymnasium was originally inaugurated in February 1946 to commemorate this history.

Local students and educators noted that the improvements resolve previous issues with weather conditions and inadequate facilities, providing a safer and more comfortable environment for basketball, soccer, and volleyball activities.
