Nuevo León and Chile consider new sanitation legislation

In the Mexican state of Nuevo León, legislators have introduced a proposal to amend the State Water and Drainage Law so that private companies could purchase wastewater directly from the municipal system, build and operate treatment plants on their premises, and reuse the treated water in industrial processes. The measure is presented as a voluntary option for firms to help alleviate chronic saturation and overflow problems in the Monterrey metropolitan drainage network.

In Chile, Deputy Guillermo Valdés has presented a bill to modify the Consumer Protection Law, mandating that commercial establishments of 50 m² or more provide free public restrooms that meet accessibility and hygiene standards. The proposal aims to guarantee basic sanitary services for shoppers, families, the elderly, and people with disabilities across the country.
