Nuevo León health authorities report death and critical illness linked to rickettsia
Health authorities in Nuevo León have confirmed the death of a 15-year-old girl, identified as Citlaly Michel, due to suspected rickettsiosis. The teenager, a resident of the Arroyo El Obispo neighborhood in Santa Catarina, passed away in intensive care at the Hospital Universitario after being bitten by a tick.
Additionally, a nine-year-old boy remains in serious condition at the Hospital Materno Infantil. The child is reportedly unconscious and intubated, with his family requesting blood donors. Health officials are monitoring both cases as potential links to tick-borne rickettsia.
The Secretaría de Salud de Nuevo León has issued a public health alert, warning that early symptoms can mimic a common flu or fever, including body aches and abdominal pain. Officials urge residents to prevent tick infestations by deworming pets, inspecting animal fur, and cleaning living spaces.
