Nufarm to close Kwinana herbicide plant by 2027

Australian crop‑protection firm Nufarm announced it will cease operations at its Kwinana manufacturing site in Western Australia by May 2027, after which the plant will be decommissioned and put up for sale. The decision follows a five‑year effort to boost volumes that fell short as customers shifted toward fully formulated imported herbicides, creating excess capacity in the domestic market.

Nufarm’s commercial general manager Paul O'Keeffe said around 20 million litres of annual production will be transferred to the company’s Laverton facility in Victoria, helping to reduce fixed costs and improve utilisation. He added that the Kwinana team will continue to produce high‑quality product while the supply chain is reset and that growers should not expect any disruption to supply.

The Kwinana plant currently accounts for about 20 percent of Nufarm Australia’s business, but the market shift no longer justifies a dedicated west‑coast facility, prompting the consolidation of the manufacturing footprint.
