Nufarm validates aphid‑resistance genes in Argentine sorghum

Nufarm, in partnership with the University of Kansas, used molecular markers to confirm the presence of genes that provide tolerance to the yellow aphid across its entire commercial grain sorghum portfolio in Argentina. The research, led by breeding program head Diego Druetto and supported by breeder Gonzalo Cucit of Nufarm Brazil, followed field evaluations that identified naturally tolerant germplasm. The newly licensed markers enable rapid incorporation of resistance into breeding lines, improving yield stability and reducing a major sanitary risk.

The breakthrough is described as a turning point for Argentine sorghum, which is shifting from a marginal forage crop to a grain with growing international demand, enhanced drought resilience, and now stronger pest protection.
