Numismatics and the history of rare coin collecting
Numismatics, the study and collection of coins, is a hobby with a history spanning over 2,500 years. Collectors often seek rare artifacts that provide historical insight or significant financial value due to rarity or manufacturing errors.
One of the most notable historical items is the Lydian Lion, considered the world’s oldest coin. Minted around 600 BCE in the kingdom of Lydia (modern-day Turkey) from electrum, it is estimated to be worth $2.5 million today. In the United States, the chain cent holds significance as the first mass-produced, regular-issue coin struck by the U.S. Mint.
