Numrug Nature Reserve fire destroys 80% of Mongolian protected area
A massive wildfire has devastated approximately 80% of the Numrug Nature Reserve in eastern Mongolia, burning an area of roughly 4,690 square kilometers. The fire, which began on October 8 and was contained by October 16, has caused significant ecological concern. Experts warn that while vegetation may eventually return, the damage to soil quality and plant biodiversity could be permanent, potentially leading to increased soil erosion and dust storms.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by a vehicle carrying executives from Mobicom, a major Mongolian telecommunications provider and a subsidiary of the Japanese group KDDI. Mobicom CEO Yasuhiro Ochi has issued a formal apology to the Mongolian people regarding the environmental damage.
Ecologists are particularly concerned about the impact on local wildlife, including reindeer, wolves, and various bird species, which may face difficulties overwintering due to the loss of food sources and natural shelter. The reserve is a critical habitat characterized by a mix of forests, grasslands, rivers, and wetlands.
