Nunavut MLA raises environmental concerns over Port of Churchill expansion
Hudson Bay MLA Jason Iqaluq has raised concerns in the Nunavut legislature regarding the proposed Port of Churchill Plus expansion project. Representing Sanikiluaq constituents, Iqaluq warned that the development could negatively impact the Hudson Bay ecosystem and surrounding waters, specifically noting the potential for disturbing local wildlife.
The project aims to upgrade Canada’s only deep-water Arctic port by expanding trade corridors through an all-weather road, an upgraded rail line, a new energy corridor, and increased icebreaking capacity. The initiative was referred to the federal Major Projects Office in September 2025, a move intended to accelerate the permitting process.
Premier John Main stated that while Nunavut is a stakeholder rather than a direct proponent, the government recognizes the importance of strengthening transport links to connect Nunavut residents to the rest of the country. Main assured the legislature that a formal written response addressing environmental concerns and the role of the Nunavut Impact Review Board would be provided before the fall session ends on November 5.
