Inuit Circumpolar Council hears youth delegate Gwen Natsiq warn of suicide crisis in Nunavut

Gwen Natsiq, a 22‑year‑old Canadian youth delegate, addressed the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) general assembly in Iqaluit on July 24. She said she has lost about eight people to suicide over the past five years and highlighted that Nunavut records 25‑37 suicides each year – the highest per‑capita rate in Canada, with more than half of the deaths involving people under age 29, the vast majority being male.

Natsiq called for peer‑to‑peer support training for youth in smaller communities and noted that specialized health services are often thousands of kilometres away from Inuit youth. Delegates from Chukotka (Russia), Alaska (US), Greenland and Canada presented these concerns to the ICC, which serves as a forum for Inuit to discuss shared challenges. She urged greater youth involvement and emphasized the need for accessible mental‑health resources in the North.
