Marius Șumudică protests racist chants during CFR Cluj derby

CFR Cluj coach Marius Șumudică ordered his players off the pitch during the 69th minute of a Romanian Cup derby against Universitatea Cluj following racist chants from the opposing supporters. Șumudică reported that he had warned the fourth official about potential racial insults prior to the match, but no action was taken by the officiating crew when the chants, including 'țiganule' (gypsy), began.

Universitatea Cluj won the match 3-1. Following the incident, Șumudică emphasized that while he can tolerate personal insults, he will not tolerate racism, noting that FIFA and UEFA maintain strict stances against such behavior. He expressed appreciation for the African players from Universitatea Cluj who approached him to offer support after the match.

In addition to the racial abuse, Șumudică criticized the team's performance, attributing the loss to three flagrant errors. He also expressed frustration with the competitive calendar and the potential for his club to face point deductions due to financial issues, stating he would consider leaving the club if such sanctions were applied.
