Nuno Cardoso, former mayor of Porto, dies at 64

Nuno Cardoso, the former mayor of Porto, has died at the age of 64 following a prolonged illness. He passed away at the Santo António Hospital after being hospitalized for two weeks.

Cardoso served as the mayor of Porto from 1999 to 2001, succeeding Fernando Gomes. During his tenure, he oversaw significant projects including Porto 2001 as the European Capital of Culture and the construction of the Porto Metro.

A graduate in engineering from the University of Porto, he also served as a guest assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering. In recent years, he remained active in local politics, running as an independent candidate in the 2013 and 2025 municipal elections.
