Nuno Leal Maia returns to theater after decade-long hiatus
Brazilian actor Nuno Leal Maia, 79, is returning to the stage in a new production of the comedy ‘Meno male’ at Teatro dos Quatro in Rio de Janeiro. The play features an ensemble cast including Carmo Dalla Vecchia, Joaquim Lopes, and Suzy Rêgo, under the direction of Léo Stefanini.
In recent interviews, Maia addressed his decade-long absence from the spotlight, noting that while he has appeared in several films over the last five years, they lacked significant visibility. He also commented on the Brazilian television industry, stating that there is less space for veteran actors compared to international markets, noting that his recent lack of television projects is due to a lack of invitations rather than personal choice.
Maia, who rose to prominence in the 1980s with productions such as ‘Vereda Tropical’ and ‘A Gata Comeu’, expressed that he does not harbor resentment toward the industry. He currently maintains a low-profile lifestyle, dividing his time between Santos, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro, and prefers to avoid social media and the intense exposure associated with his peak fame.
