PSG relocates Ligue 1 opener to Rennes due to pitch damage
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) will play its Ligue 1 season opener against Stade Rennais at Roazhon Park in Rennes instead of the Parc des Princes. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ordered the relocation after an inspection determined that the pitch at the Parc des Princes was unsafe for players due to severe degradation caused by summer heatwaves and potential fungal issues.
Because PSG was unable to secure an alternative stadium in the Paris region, the LFP decided to reverse the home and away fixtures for this match. While the game will take place in Rennes on Sunday, August 23, a dispute has emerged regarding the return fixture scheduled for March 2027. Stade Rennais argues that the relocation is an exceptional measure that should not affect the rest of the calendar, potentially meaning they would host PSG twice. Conversely, PSG contends that the situation constitutes “exceptional circumstances” that justify a full reversal of the season's scheduled home and away matches.
PSG has announced plans to replace the damaged turf at the Parc des Princes before their next home match against Monaco on September 4.
