Journalists in Croatia and Serbia face threats and internal targeting

Journalists in the Balkan region are facing increased threats and internal tensions. In Croatia, the SafeJournalists network has condemned death threats, misogynistic insults, and nationalist messages sent to N1 journalist Nina Kljenjak. The messages, received via postcard, included threats to her safety and those of her colleagues, prompting calls for Croatian authorities to urgently identify and prosecute the perpetrator.

In Serbia, internal conflicts have emerged within the N1 newsroom. A group of journalists and editors issued a statement condemning the targeting of colleagues Danica Vučenić and Žaklina Tatalović by N1 news director Branislav Šovljanski. The staff accused Šovljanski of unprofessionalism and attempting to silence journalists through public stigmatization and management pressure.

Additionally, the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) reported that an Istinomer journalist received intimidating messages on her private phone, signaling a rise in harassment against civil society media. Meanwhile, political tensions continue regarding student movements and the vetoing of Professor Milo Lompar from electoral lists, with various actors accusing political parties and foreign embassies of influencing student politics.
