Italy hospitals report multiple successful organ donation procedures

Several significant organ and tissue donation procedures have recently taken place across various Italian hospitals, providing new hope to multiple patients on transplant waiting lists.

In Rho, a complex multi-organ and tissue procurement was coordinated by ASST Rhodense, involving surgical teams from several major centers including Niguarda, Policlinico, and ISMETT of Palermo. The procedure, which lasted from morning until midnight, successfully provided life-saving opportunities for six patients and improved the quality of life for over ten others.

In Nuoro, a 50-year-old Spanish tourist who passed away while vacationing in Sardinia became a donor. His family consented to the multi-organ procurement at San Francesco Hospital, a gesture praised by local health authorities for its profound humanity.

Additionally, the Umberto I Hospital in Siracusa reported two multi-organ procurements within a single week. These operations, involving liver, kidney, and cornea donations, were managed by the Asp of Siracusa in collaboration with the Sicilian Regional Transplant Center and ISMETT of Palermo.
