Nuova Icom to acquire former Bekaert plant in Macchiareddu
The former Bekaert industrial plant in Macchiareddu, Sardinia, will be acquired by the Sardinian company Nuova Icom, marking the conclusion of a twelve-month dispute. An agreement reached at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy ensures the reintegration of all 150 former Bekaert workers.
The industrial relaunch includes a plan for 55 new hires, bringing the total workforce to 205 permanent positions. Nuova Icom intends to invest a total of 40 million euros into the site. This investment is allocated as follows: 25 million euros for infrastructure, 8 million euros for the industrial plan, and 7 million euros for development and diversification opportunities between the Macchiareddu and Portovesme sites.
Regional President Alessandra Todde and industrial officials noted that the transition from a foreign multinational to a national company aims to transform the local port area into a Mediterranean hub. Labor unions, including Fiom, Fsm, and Uilm, expressed satisfaction with the agreement to absorb the existing workforce.
