Nuremberg Music University President resigns amid abuse of power allegations
The Nuremberg University of Music (Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg) is working to restore stability following the resignation of President Rainer Kotzian. Kotzian stepped down amid allegations of abuse of power, specifically admitting to an inappropriate conversation with a student where he failed to account for the power imbalance between a professor and a student.
Vice President Renate Reitinger will take over interim leadership duties. Although Reitinger and Co-Vice President Maren Wilhelm offered their resignations following Kotzian’s departure, the University Council unanimously rejected their requests and expressed continued confidence in them. Kotzian will remain at the institution to focus on research but will no longer participate in teaching.
The university has announced that an independent external body will be commissioned to conduct a thorough investigation into the events of recent months. A formal search process to fill the vacant presidency will also be initiated. Bavarian Minister of Arts Markus Blume stated that while he respects the resignation, the allegations must be carefully investigated to ensure universities remain places of trust and respect.
