Nuremberg opera house construction progresses on former Nazi rally grounds

Construction of the new opera house on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremberg is progressing according to schedule. The project, which serves as a temporary home for the State Theater while its historic city center venue undergoes renovation, features modern stage technology and improved acoustics.

Project leaders report that the rehearsal stage is nearly complete, with the orchestra pit and auditorium already visible. At peak times, more than 200 workers are involved in the expansion. Technical testing and initial commissioning are expected to begin in May 2027, with the goal of moving the opera and ballet companies into the new facility and the adjacent Congress Hall for the 2028/2029 season.

The design includes high-tech elements, such as rotatable panels in the orchestra rehearsal room to manage sound reflection and absorption, and glass walkways connecting the opera house to the Congress Hall.
