Deutsche Bahn faces rising long-distance train cancellations

Deutsche Bahn is facing significant operational challenges, with data from the first half of 2026 revealing that approximately 8 percent of long-distance trains were either fully or partially cancelled. This represents a three-percentage-point increase compared to the same period last year and is the second-highest cancellation rate since 2019. Punctuality for long-distance services stood at only 58.7 percent during this period.

Green Party MP Matthias Gastel has criticized the rising number of cancellations, attributing them to vehicle malfunctions and calling for strengthened preventive maintenance and increased reserve capacity at key hubs. While 2024 saw higher cancellation rates due to GDL union strikes, current issues are linked to technical failures and ongoing infrastructure projects.

Regional disruptions are also widespread. In Baden-Württemberg, service between Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental and Gaildorf West has been suspended due to urgent repairs, necessitating replacement bus services. Similarly, commuters in the Nuremberg area are experiencing delays and cancellations between Lauf and Hersbruck due to track maintenance. Additionally, Deutsche Bahn is implementing new regulations, including an alcohol ban at several major stations like Berlin Hauptbahnhof to improve security and reduce litter.
