Nuremberg reports significant crime reduction at Nelson-Mandela-Platz

Authorities in Nuremberg report a significant improvement in the security situation at Nelson-Mandela-Platz in the city's southern district. Since late 2023, the area near the main station had seen a rise in aggressive drug dealing, leading to increased violence, assaults, and sexual offenses.

To combat this, the police established the 'Nelson' working group, implementing a combination of repressive and preventive measures. These included increased police presence, the creation of weapon and knife prohibition zones, and cannabis prohibition zones. Additionally, authorities modified the local landscape by trimming vegetation to eliminate hiding spots for dealers.

Police data indicates that assaults have more than halved compared to the previous year, with violence within the drug scene dropping nearly to zero. Robberies have also decreased by more than half, and knife-related crimes have fallen by over one-third. The success is attributed to closer coordination between the city, the police, and the public prosecutor's office, alongside a more person-oriented approach to criminal proceedings.
